Overview:
This role is responsible for creating, reviewing, and maintaining accurate product specifications, ensuring compliance with customer standards, food safety regulations, and internal requirements. The Specification Technologist works closely with cross-functional teams and plays a key part in supporting technical integrity across the business.
Main Responsibilities:
- Create, update, and maintain product specifications to ensure compliance with customer standards and relevant legislation.
- Review and approve specifications for all raw materials.
- Prepare provisional specifications for new product proposals, providing sufficient detail for customer consideration.
- Complete finished product specifications in various formats, including retailer-specific and web-based platforms.
- Collaborate with teams across Technical, New Product Development (NPD), and Production to ensure specifications are aligned with expectations.
- Manage and update retailer and customer specification portals to maintain accurate, current information.
- Ensure product and labelling compliance with legal standards, customer guidelines, and BRCGS requirements.
- Support customer queries related to specifications, ingredients, and technical data.
- Liaise with suppliers to confirm raw material information is accurate and aligns with business needs.
- Maintain thorough documentation to support internal processes and external audits.
- Participate in technical meetings and reviews.
- Assist with internal audits based on BRCGS Food Safety Standards.
- Provide general support to the Technical Department when required.

Key Skills & Experience:
- Previous experience in a similar role within food manufacturing is essential.
- Good understanding of food safety laws, retailer codes of practice, and labelling regulations.
- High attention to detail with strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Confident communicator with the ability to work across departments.
- Capable of managing multiple priorities and working independently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and experienced with online specification systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in Food Science, Food Technology, or a similar subject.
- Experience working with major UK retailers and their specification systems.
- Familiarity with BRCGS standards and UK food legislation.
